Digital intermediate (often abbreviated as DI) describes the process of digitizing a motion picture and manipulating color and other image characteristics to change the look, and is usually the final creative adjustment to a movie before distribution in theaters. It is distinguished from the telecine process in which film is scanned and color is manipulated but only intended for video and television distribution. A digital intermediate is also customarily done at higher resolution and with greater color fidelity than telecine transfers and utilizes only digital tools no analog video device.
Our DI workflow is designed with the filmmaker in mind to provide maximum quality and flexibility at every step of the process. In addition, we have 7 colorists to choose from who can work within a variety of budgets. From a technical standpoint our DI workflow is unparalled. We are the only facility in the midwest with a SPIRIT 2K Datacine. The 16mm and 35mm film gates and optics alone cost over $500K. These optics along with the ability to scan 2K in real time insures that the beauty of every frame will be on the screen. Our DI color correction system of choice is the DaVinci Resolve. The Resolve is the software based version of the DaVinci 2Ks that we use everyday at Filmworkers Club. This allows all of colorists to move between the DI room at Astro and the traditional telecine environment at Filmworkers. Title design, VFX and Finishing are also available.
